PokéBonk Difficulty Guide: Normal vs Hard vs Nightmare
What each difficulty changes since Patch #3, and when to step up.
Quick answer
Classic has three difficulties. Normal pays the base reward. Hard pays ×1.75 with enemies +70%. Nightmare pays ×2.5 with enemies +160%. Start on Normal, learn one region, and move up only once your build has area coverage and an escape plan.
| Normal | Hard | Nightmare | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reward multiplier (Star Sand) | ×1 | ×1.75 | ×2.5 |
| Enemy strength | baseline | +70% | +160% |
| Extra threat since Patch #3 | — | more and faster enemies, more elites, bigger and earlier waves, guardians go into Fury earlier with a bigger escort | everything Hard has, plus a third Totem and elites that explode when they fall |
| Extra damage from zone 2 (Patch #4) | — | +12% | +25% |
Rows 1–2: Observed, v0.7.2 (difficulty selector). Rows 3–4: Official, Patch #3 and Patch #4.
What did Patch #3 change about Hard and Nightmare?
Before, they were “little more than enemies with extra health”. Now they bring more enemies that arrive faster, more elites, and bigger Swarms, Stampedes and waves that come sooner. Guardians telegraph less, enter Fury earlier and bring a larger escort. At the start of each zone a notice tells you what your difficulty changes. Official, Patch #3.
Is Normal easy on the first zone?
Patch #4 capped an Alpha’s hits in zone 1 on Normal at 15% of your HP, because it had been the first big wall. From zone 2 on, Hard and Nightmare hit harder (+12% and +25%). Official, Patch #4.
Which difficulty should I play?
- First runs: Normal. Learn the map, the guardian altar and your starter’s kit (see the starter guide).
- Stepping up: when you clear Normal without relying on luck. More Star Sand is only worth it if you survive to collect it.
- Nightmare: expect exploding elites and three Totems; keep an escape route and use Shift to slide out of telegraphed attacks.
Our reading, untested: the reward grows slower than the threat, so raising difficulty before the build is stable usually costs more than it pays.
Does Survival have difficulties?
Public tests of earlier builds (Beta v0.5.5) saw no Normal/Hard/Nightmare buttons in the Survival preparation screen. Survival is also being reworked for Season 2 (Patch #7), so treat Survival details as temporary. See the beginner guide for the two modes.
Report problems
The difficulties are new. If something feels unfair or too easy, the game’s “Report” button in the main and pause menus goes straight to the team (official, Patch #3).

Sources & verification
Sources: the game’s official patch announcements (api.pokebonk.com/news, Patches #1–#7 and the maintenance update, 15–18 Oct 2026, US Pacific Time), plus our own observation of the game in Beta v0.7.2 (Patch #7) on 18 Oct 2026. The reward multipliers and enemy percentages are the values shown in the Classic difficulty selector, observed in v0.7.2. Each fact is labelled Official (from the announcements) or Observed (seen in the game UI). Patches overwrite one another, so numbers may have changed since; we have not re-measured every value.
